What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure whereby a surgeon gains access to the abdominal cavity by way of small incisions in the abdominal wall.
In laparoscopy, the surgeon makes several small incisions through which slender surgical instruments are passed. This technique eliminates the need for a large incision and creates less tissue damage. Dr. Feng specializes in advanced laparoscopic techniques to allow patients to undergo surgery in the least invasive manner. Sometimes, patients who are super-obese (more than 350 pounds) or have had previous abdominal operations may not be good candidates for laparoscopy, however. Each patient is evaluated carefully to discuss these issues. |

The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band procedure is routinely performed via laparoscopy, as well as the Vertical Gastrectomy. Both the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Duodenal Switch are also performed laparoscopically. The small incisions result in less pain, shorter hospitalization, a faster recovery, and fewer complications than open operations. Experience and training are important in performing laparoscopic procedures since inexperience can create serious problems if done incorrectly.
