About John J. Feng, M.D., FACS

After completing training in advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery in 2001, Dr. Feng entered private practice and has established himself as an expert and specialist in minimally invasive surgery for treating obesity and many general surgery disorders. After thriving in solo practice in San Mateo, California, Dr. Feng joined the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Medical Group in the Redwood City Center in September 2009.

Dr. Feng’s specialty interests include Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of Morbid Obesity as well as Endoscopic Treatment options in development. He also has interests and expertise in a variety of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of many surgical diseases such as acid reflux, hiatal hernia, achalasia, tumors, ulcers, feeding tube needs, gastroparesis, bleeding, adhesions, colon, solid organ, and gallbladder disorders.

Dr. Feng is an expert in and performs the latest technique of the restrictive vertical sleeve gastroplasty/gastrectomy, also known as the sleeve gastrectomy. This technique is quickly replacing the gastric bypass, and offers patients another option who are not candidates for gastric banding or the bypass. The vertical sleeve gastrectomy may offer better outcomes by being safer with fewer short- and long-term complications with similar weight loss results, and probably offers an effective solution for a wider range of patients.

Center of Excellence Surgeon: After spending 4 years as Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, California, Dr. Feng is the current Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California on the San Francisco Peninsula. As director, Dr. Feng helped CPMC become a Center of Excellence designated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This designation means that while complications and issues are possible in any surgery, the rates of complications performed at a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence are extremely low if performed by the right surgeon. Dr. Feng is excited about helping Sequoia Hospital become an ASMBS Center of Excellence. This goal and his involvement in the process which is ongoing has created a hospital program that has allowed patients to receive excellent care in a supportive, compassionate, experienced and comprehensive environment.
