John J. Feng, MD specializes in advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive weight loss, or bariatric surgery. He has dedicated his practice to several methods of bariatric surgery, all of which can be performed laparoscopically. He believes that surgery can be tailored to the individual patient. These procedures thus allow for less postoperative pain, smaller scars, fewer wound problems and quicker recovery. These techniques include the (1) placement of an adjustable gastric band, or LAP-BAND® System or REALIZE™ Band, (2) vertical sleeve gastroplasty/gastrectomy, (3) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and (4) duodenal switch, or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.
As an American Society for Bariatric Society Center of Excellence Surgeon and Board Certified General Surgeon, Dr. Feng was the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco for several years. He has now been appointed as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Services at Sequoia Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University with Honors and Distinction in 1988 and completed Medical School in 1993 at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He trained at UCSF for general surgery residency from 1993 to 2001, during which time he dedicated 3 years to wound healing research with Dr. Thomas K. Hunt. He then completed a specialty fellowship with Dr. Michel Gagner and Dr. Barry Salky at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City in advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive general surgery and bariatric surgery from 2001-2002.
Currently, his main office is located in Redwood City, near Sequoia Hospital, at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Redwood City Clinic. Dr. Feng has privileges at Sequoia Hospital, Stanford University and El Camino Hospital. He also operates at the Dr. R. Hewlett Lee Surgecenter of Palo Alto and the Menlo Park Surgical Hospital. For his patients, in additional to nutritional support and long-term followup on a regular basis, he personally conducts support group meetings to help achieve optimal care for them.
After completing training in advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery in 2001, Dr. Feng entered private practice and has established himself as an expert and specialist in minimally invasive surgery for treating obesity and many general surgery disorders. After thriving in solo practice in San Mateo, California, Dr. Feng joined the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Medical Group in the Redwood City Center in September 2009.
Dr. Feng’s specialty interests include Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of Morbid Obesity as well as Endoscopic Treatment options in development. He also has interests and expertise in a variety of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of many surgical diseases such as acid reflux, hiatal hernia, achalasia, tumors, ulcers, feeding tube needs, gastroparesis, bleeding, adhesions, colon, solid organ, and gallbladder disorders.
